The bradoon is a snaffle bit, which works in conjunction with a curb bit to make up the double bridle. It is typically a thinner and lighter bit than a typical training snaffle, since there is both a need to reduce the quantity of biting material in the horse’s mouth, and the expectation that the horse will not be leaning on the bit as much as a less-advanced horse might.

The circumference of a bradoon mouthpiece is typically in the 12-16mm range, and the rings are generally 55mm in diameter, which is smaller than a regular training snaffle.

The French link has proven one of the most popular mouthpieces. 2 joints, means the pressure of the bit is distributed over both the tongue and bars of the mouth. Because the mouthpiece has two joints, it shouldn't cause any interference with the roof of the mouth.

The French link uses tongue pressure to encourage the horse to go on the bit and has bar and lip pressure but not a squeezing action like that of a bit with a single joint. The more joints a bit has the less likely the horse is to lean as the bit becomes more mobile.

Loose Ring.

The loose ring is one of the most popular cheek across all brands and designs. It has more movement than an eggbutt as the mouthpiece isn’t fixed meaning there isn’t a fixed pressure on the tongue.

Due to the ring being able to slide through the mouthpiece, the rider’s rein aid is not as direct as the eggbutt. This can also mean that there is more movement in the mouth, which can be distracting or uncomfortable for certain horses. Correct fitting of loose-rings is vital to ensure the rings don’t pinch the side of the horse’s cheek.

This bit would ideally suit horses who are established being ridden in the contact and aren’t fussy in the mouth. A loose ring can suit a stronger horse as it gives more control than a fixed eggbutt. It is also more suitable for a horse that may fix or lean onto a fixed ring.

Eggbutt.

The traditional eggbutt snaffle tends to be quite simple in design and option of mouthpiece. It's designed to give stability for the horse to stretch forwards and down.

The mouthpiece is designed to act on the outer edges of the tongue with a squeezing action to gain a level of control.

The eggbutt cheek is often a good choice for a sensitive horse that needs the stability to provide encouragement needed to stretch forward and look for the bit.

Eggbutt ia also a great choice for horses with lips that protrude from the face, as you can achieve a better fit without the risk of rubbing.

Available in Stainless Steel in Eggbutt or Loose Ring in 4', 4.25', 4.5', 4.75, 5', 5.25' or 6.25'.
