Lorina Single Jointed Loose Ring Weymouth Bradoon Snaffle Bit Dressage Legal

The bradoon is a snaffle bit, which works in conjunction with a curb bit to make up the double bridle. It is typically a thinner and lighter bit than a typical training snaffle, since there is both a need to reduce the quantity of biting material in the horse’s mouth, and the expectation that the horse will not be leaning on the bit as much as a less-advanced horse might.

The circumference of a bradoon mouthpiece is typically in the 12-16mm range, and the rings are generally 55mm in diameter, which is smaller than a regular training snaffle.

Loose Ring.

The loose ring is one of the most popular cheek across all brands and designs. It has more movement than an eggbutt as the mouthpiece isn’t fixed meaning there isn’t a fixed pressure on the tongue.

The loose-ring is available in a variety of different diameters. The largest has the least chance of pulling through the mouth and is often used in racing. Then the smallest have traditionally been used as the bridoon part of a double bridle.

Due to the ring being able to slide through the mouthpiece, the rider’s rein aid is not as direct as the eggbutt. This can also mean that there is more movement in the mouth, which can be distracting or uncomfortable for certain horses. Correct fitting of loose-rings is vital to ensure the rings don’t pinch the side of the horse’s cheek.
