Electrolytes are important for cardiac function, muscle contraction, dilation of blood vessels, nerve impulse conduction, kidney filtration, gut motility, maintaining internal pH Levels, and hydration. A deficit of these important minerals can result in poor muscle function and performance issues.
Horses in work lose electrolytes during sweating. Sweating is a major component of thermoregulation and it is known that electrolytes are lost through sweat.
However, electrolytes can also be lost through normal bodily functions (such as urination & defecation) and daily feed, forage and water intakes alone may not meet a horse's required electrolyte requirements; therefore, it is advisable to consider feeding an electrolyte supplement to horses in work, or that sweat a lot, particularly during hot weather.
